What are Views and Groups
A view is a collection of assets grouped in a user-defined way. Within a view, you can define groups that bundle assets together in a logical fashion, for example by type or by environment.
Create a View
- Select the assets tab on the sidebar, then select the top three dots and select Create View.
- Enter a name for the view and click Save.
How to Modify a View
- To edit a view, first, select the assets tab on the righthand sidebar and make sure you have selected the view you wish to edit. Then select the top three dots and select Edit View.
- This brings up the same window as creating a view allowing to change the name.
Creating a Group
If you chose to create your own groups, you will have the opportunity to define them after you save the view.
- Select the assets tab on the sidebar, make sure you are in the correct view, then open the overflow menu (3 dots) and select Create Group.
- Enter the name for your group, and field scheme if necessary. (We will discuss Rules in the next section.)
Group Rules
- The first drop-down menu under the rules contains 2 options, the first is "Any of the following" that matches an asset that matches Any of the rules. The second is "All of the following" that matches an asset that matches All of the rules.
- Under the left drop-down list, you can choose the provider that you can match against such as: Name, Type, Provider Type, vSphere Resource Pool, Azure Resource Group, vSphere Host, vSphere VM Folder, Office 365 Account.
- Under the middle dropdown list are some rules, with options such as “starts with” or “contains” for strings, or drop-down list options for asset types.
- The filter text box is where you enter what you want the rules to filter for.
- Create a Rule button will add a new rule "row".
- Create a Rule Sub-Group button will add a new grouping which consists of its own "Any/And" selector and sibling rules you wish to add. Rule Sub groups are useful for creating rules with complex Boolean logic such as "(Azure AND VM) OR (vSphere AND VM)"
How to Modify a Group
- To edit a group, first, hover over the group you wish to edit. Then select the three dots to the right and select Edit.
- This brings up the same window as creating a group, where you can change the name as well as select which rules you want the group to follow.
- You can also edit groups by selecting the group you wish to edit and click the cog icon to the top right of the page.
Group Properties
- Group properties gives you a summary of the types of assets that are in that group and the states of those assets.
- The group properties view can also show you an assets view with all the assets in that group along with the name, type and provider they are related to. You can also view the state assets are in through the folder structure on the left.
Folder Structure
- In the asset view, the groups are displayed as a folder structure. Groups are displayed with a folder icon, while assets appear as dots or asset type specific symbols.
- Where folders contain child assets or other folders there will be a symbol > which when clicked will display the children. To view an asset, click on it and it will open the asset view that contains a summary and more.
